Originally, we are from Yemen where we were born and raised amidst coffee plants. Our expertise originates from a long line of ancestors, all committed to the tradition and innovation of coffee. He grew up around coffee and believes the best beans are from Yemen. The first time Husam Kaid tried Adeni chai (Yemeni tea) at Qahwah House, it reminded him of Yemen. One sip and he was reminiscing about Ramadan nights in the old city of Sanaa.

This way of making coffee helps to maximize flavor and quality for the coffee drinker. The coffeehouse has become so successful that Alhasbani opened a few more branches. And in 2022, he is excepted to open at least five new locations across the country. The coffee beans come via ship directly from his family's farm in Yemen. And though the shipment often takes two months to arrive, for him it's worth the wait.

The quality of the coffee and the origin story has resonated with customers. The Clifton location, which opened in November at 441 Crooks Ave., is his fifth store since he started the company in 2017. Alhasbani expects another 15 locations to open by the end of 2023. In addition to the coffee beans that Alhasbani roasts and grinds in-house, he also offers tea and some food items.

And although there are challenges in both journeys, the result is worth it. The passion and connection behind each cup of coffee served at Qahwah House go beyond what many baristas can offer. Qahwah House (qahwah meaning coffee in Arabic) is a Yemeni coffee shop which brings people together in its locations in Dearborn, the greater Chicago area, New York, and most recently, New Jersey.
Qahwah House, featuring Yemeni coffee and pastries, opens in Skokie
In addition to coffee and tea, Qahwah House also offers cakes and pastries from Zingerman’s Bakehouse in Ann Arbor. Both the tea and coffee served can include added spices, depending on what the customer wants. One blend of tea Alhasbani made included cinnamon and cardamom. The pride for his family, home country, and the history of the Yemeni coffee bean all fuel Alhasbani’s passion for running a café. DEARBORN—A cup of Joe is readily available at almost every intersection in the metropolitan area, especially Dearborn, where coffee shops, diners, hookah bars and gas stations all boast a bold and strong coffee. "They go beyond coffee. If there's a conversation, the staff know a lot about the product, the history of the coffee, where the beans are coming from.
Here at the coffee shop, I use the same recipes my ancestors and family used to prepare the traditional Yemeni drinks. We use spices such as cardamom, ginger, and cinnamon in many of our drinks. People from all over Michigan and the United States come to enjoy our coffee, and many comment that it’s like nothing they’ve ever tried before. Dearborn has a diverse population, and all were very supportive when I first opened and still are!
Popular Qahwah House opens in Clifton, serving authentic Yemeni coffee
The coffee there is grown organically in higheraltitudes and prepared using natural methods. A Yemeni immigrant, Ibrahim has been roasting and brewing coffee in Dearborn for two years. But not just any coffee—he imports all his beans directly from his own family farm that he grew up on in Yemen. With political disturbances in Yemen, Ibrahim has had his fair share of challenges in importing, but he perseveres. Part of Qahwah House’s mission is to educate people about Yemen and the origins of coffee. Although many people think that coffee originated in Brazil or Colombia, there is some historical evidence that Yemen is the birthplace of coffee.
In the outskirts of Detroit in Dearborn, Mich., you will find the world’s finest Yemeni coffee. Here, you’ll also meet Ibrahim Alhasbani—the founder, owner, roaster, and barista behind Qahwah House, which means “coffee” in Arabic. There are many legends and theories about when coffee was first discovered, including an Ethiopian legend about a goat herder, Kaldi, who noticed his goats becoming energetic after eating from a coffee shrub. However, coffee cultivation and trade began on the Arabian peninsula, and the coffee bean was first consumed as a beverage in Yemen in the 1400s. But perhaps the most noticeable element is the smell of freshly ground Yemeni coffee. The place fills up with the sounds of Arabic music playing in the background, people catching up with old friends and making new ones or meeting with a potential spouse, and families playing card games.
"This space reminds young Muslims, young Arabs of our culture," Alhasbani said. "It reminds us where we come from, so they will not forget their culture and their history, and they will work to improve on this history." "There are no Arabs or Muslims in this area," Alhasbani told MEE.
Alhasbani and his family own the farm where his coffee beans are sourced. He said his father and grandfather worked in the coffee industry for a long time. What also attracts young Muslims to Qahwah House are the hours. After 5 or 6pm, they will shut down because people don't usually drink coffee after that.
While people waited for their orders, many would stand and admire a giant map that traced the roots of Yemeni coffee and how it was distributed to the rest of the world. On a cold mid-February afternoon, the coffee house was crowded. One of Alhasbani's reasons for launching Qahwah House was to build bridges between cultures. It's one of the main reasons why the New York City location is in Brooklyn's Williamsburg, a majority white, Jewish neighbourhood, he says.
“When we open more locations, we create more opportunities for jobs here and also back in Yemen,” he says. Qahwah House sources its coffee beans directly from Yemen, which creates opportunities for coffee farmers. Qahwah House’s sourcing of coffee beans directly from Yemen is part of their effort to educate people on this history and parts of Yemeni culture to be proud of.
Noorehden Alsayidi, who works at the Clifton branch, grew up in Yemen and moved to the US in 2014. He started working at Qahwah House when the Brooklyn location opened after his cousin introduced him to the opportunity. When you walk into Qahwah House, one of the first things you notice is a giant map showing the origins of the Yemeni coffee trade.
The birth of coffee culture
The newest branch in Clifton, New Jersey opened in November 2022. Aleyna Ciftci, 24, of Wayne said she used to travel to Brooklyn to visit another franchise location that became a popular hangout for young Muslims. She enjoys talking with friends, playing cards and drinking chai there, she said.

As it grew in popularity, the lucrative crop was shipped across the Middle East and Europe from the Red Sea port. The beans at Qahwah House are plucked from the farm that his family has owned and operated for eight generations in Sanaa, the Yemeni capital. The coffee trees stretch across fertile terraces carved into mountainsides and thrive in the warm climate and high altitude. Ahmed said the store aims to bring authentic coffee and new flavor profiles to Skokie. Owner Ibrahim Alhasbani’s family has been growing coffee for eight generations in Yemen, Ahmed said.

Coffee always had a social quality to it, Um said, adding that coffeehouses could be found in major cities like Cairo, Istanbul and Damascus by the mid 1500s. The drink also had detractors, who thought it could inspire radical ideas or seditiousness because of its social character, she said. Around the 15th century, Sufi monks were known to make coffee to stay awake during mediation and prayers.

“You got one person sitting [at] a table alone and then by the end of the time he leaves, he has 20 people sitting with him,” he says. For practising Muslims who do not go to clubs or bars, there are few places to hang out other than restaurants. Qahwah House provides an alternative community space for people to socialise. Waell Ali, a co-owner of the Clifton location, said he learned about the heritage of Yemen, his family’s country of origin, when he started working at Qahwah House. A pour over is a handcrafted style of brewing coffee which requires a slow rhythmic process. After the first drops of water are absorbed in the beans, they must fluff up or “bloom” before more water is poured on top.
How 'Port of Mokha' reclaimed coffee for Yemen's farmers
At the Qahwah House — "qahwah" means "coffee" in Arabic — a massive map adorns a wall depicting historic trade routes of Arabica beans from Yemen to the rest of the world. In the 15th century, Yemen became the first place to cultivate and drink coffee beverages, and then exported the crop around the world. Coffee lovers who visit the new Qahwah House in Clifton will find more than just a premium cup of rich, imported brew. They will also find a story rich in history, tradition and culture that starts centuries ago in the Yemeni port city of Mocha, along the Red Sea.
He described the coffee as having natural sweetness and a fruity, not bitter, aftertaste. It also has a natural chocolate flavor that other places have tried to emulate by adding chocolate to coffee and calling it mocha. Latte aficionados may enjoy the store’s signature latte, which mixes honey, cinnamon, ginger and cardamom with espresso and milk, he added. “A lot of our customers and fans coming to our Lombard location were really adamant about our opening in Skokie,” he said. Yemen is known for the port of Mocha or Al Mokha, where the shared name of the delicious espresso and chocolate drink gets its fame. This month, Ibrahim Alhasbani had a soft opening for his Yemeni coffee shop “Qahwah House” located at 6655 Schaefer Road.
For many Muslims and Arab Americans, Yemeni coffee shop Qahwah House feels like home
And for many of the young Muslims and Arabs in New York, Qahwah House serves as a place of community - a place where they can get a taste of the place many of them yearn to be in. That’s why I have a plan to improve the business and start the process for franchising. According to its founder Ibrahim, Qahwah House plans on expanding to 20 additional locations this year and eventually expanding outside the US in Canada and Europe. The Clifton café, which opened Nov. 6, is in a location that straddles the border with Paterson in an area that is home to many Middle Eastern restaurants, bakeries and grocery stories. "Anything that comes from the place of origin is always the best." Used by the ancients to clean and protect wounds, expedite the healing process and eliminate infection and disease, honey is still widely respected by both practitioners of alternative medicine, consumers and many doctors.
Alhasbani only uses Yemeni coffee beans in the coffee drinks made at Qahwah House. Customers can ask for lattes, cappuccinos, espresso and anything else they might ask for in a typical coffee shop. In the 1400s, the first coffee shipments began from Mocha port on Yemen's Red Sea coast, which was named after the variety of coffee beans found there.
Marketing Manager Mohamed Ahmed said the business, which has another Illinois location in suburban Lombard, has expanded to Skokie in response to customer demand. Qahwah House is in the process of planning its grand opening for sometime in late October. Alhasbani bakes the layered pastry and serves it with a drizzle of a Yemeni honey on top. He offers a pastry called bint al-sahn or sabaya that many Yemenis consider a particular favorite.
I’m actually very glad that I opened my first coffee shop here in Dearborn! I did something different and unique in that I use only Yemeni coffee beans. That’s why the public in Dearborn, and many different cities in Michigan, love what I create for them. Because of their support, Qahwah House has had all this success. But for the coffee that Ibrahim Alhasbani pours at Qahwah House in Dearborn, “origin” means much more than where the beans came from; it also refers to his own origin story. Just as his coffee beans must make the journey from Yemen to the United States, so did Ibrahim Alhasbani.

It's one of the biggest celebrations in Central America — even bigger than the Christmas holidays for most families, so you can expect crowds during that time. If you have an extended stay in Panama City, consider a trip to the Archipelago de las Perlas (Pearl Islands) in southeastern Panama to view the humpback whales. It's a short flight to the islands, or you can travel by ferry to see the whales that are still in the waters around the archipelago after coming to breed in August and September. If traveling earlier in the month, you may also see nesting loggerheads and green turtles southeast of Panama City in Isla Canas (Cane Island) or Bocas del Toro. October is a rainy month, but it's also one of the coolest months of the year, with high temperatures in the low to mid-80s. The average year-round temperature in Panama is about 86 degrees, so it doesn't vary much during the year, but it's more humid in October with the wet weather.

When your ship spends the day in Colon, you can see more of Panama on a range of shore excursions. Despite the monumental achievement of engineering that the Panama Canal represents, the drive from Colon to Panama City is just under an hour, so there are plenty of options. With drier weather and high temperatures hovering around 88 degrees, it's less humid in the region in December. However, it's the holiday season, so cruise fares and other costs, like hotels for pre- and post-cruise stays, will be more expensive if you travel this month. December is one of the peak tourism months in Panama, with Panamanians traveling for the holidays and visitors from North America and Europe escaping the cold weather at home.

If you want the best pricing and fewer crowds, October and November are the rainy season, so the pricing will be lower — and you'll avoid the holiday crowds and high fares in December. Carnival is a festival in mid-January in Panama City and other towns around the country.

Experiencing this marvel of early 20th-century engineering appeals to those with a wide array of interests, from history and politics to colonial architecture and wildlife spotting. Built by the U.S. government between 1903 and 1914, this 50-mile waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans revolutionized shipping by creating an expedited route for the transit of cargo and, ultimately, cruise ship passengers. This ship also has approximately 700 balconies and a majority of its staterooms give travelers a magnificent view of the ocean. On the day of the transit, prime viewing locations on the bow and near windows go quickly.

If this isn’t a possibility, it would be great to host one daily lecture as an introduction to veganism and its benefits for all cruise ship passengers.
Imagine beginning your day embracing yoga and meditation classes in the fresh air and the ocean at your side, then completing your evenings with nightly entertainment and social events. Winner of the Eco Awards Namibia for their contribution to responsible tourism in the country, this Windhoek-based safari company is happy to accommodate vegan travelers. I ate well when I joined two of their tours as part of my trip around southern Africa in 2017.
Cruise lines are committed to ensuring customer satisfaction, and they will do their best to accommodate your requests. Buffets on cruise ships are a treasure trove of food options, and with a bit of creativity, you can easily whip up a vegan meal. Keep an eye out for plant-based dishes, fresh vegetables, and fruits, or ask the head chefs for existing vegan options or custom creations. Another sustainability concern is the impact of cruise ships on local ecosystems and communities. For example, cruise ships can contribute to over-tourism, which can damage fragile ecosystems and put a strain on local resources.
On the vegan cruise with Holistic Holiday at Sea, the food on the MSC Divina isn’t just vegan. About 65% of the cruise ship passengers were sailing with the Holistic Holiday at Sea group, while the other half of passengers weren’t sailing with the group. Those touring with our group had special access to the all-vegan buffet, as well as the vegan menus in the dining room for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Remember, while these cruise lines are leading the way in vegan-friendly options, it’s still crucial to inform them of your dietary needs before booking and once onboard. It’s also a good idea to check the most recent reviews and experiences from other vegan travelers, as offerings can change. Dinner is typically the main event on a cruise, and many cruise lines offer separate vegan menus or vegetarian menus with vegan options.
The vegan menu offers a variety of delicious options, including vegan sushi rolls, roasted vegetable tart and chocolate truffle cake. As starters, there are usually two appetizers to choose from, and one soup. Overall, vegan cruising is a great way to enjoy a luxurious vacation while staying true to your dietary preferences and needs. With a little research and communication, you can find the perfect vegan cruise that offers everything you need to have a fun and fulfilling vacation. As a customer, you have the right to enjoy your cruise experience to the fullest, and that includes having your dietary needs catered to. Don’t hesitate to remind the staff of your dietary restrictions and ask for vegan options.
